The inside surfaces of pipes have a major influence on the flow pattern in pipelines, which is why they should be as smooth as possible to keep losses due to pipe friction to a minimum whilst ensuring that no or only little sedimentation occurs in continuously operated sewers. However, such surfaces are effective only to a limited extent because certain constituents of the wastewater will deposit on the surface if the flow rate within the sewer falls below a critical threshold.
