KANN BAUSTOFFWERKE

Climate block for time-tested construction material qualities at high CO2 savings

In addition to the RX40 recycling block that has been distinguished with the German ecolabel Blue Angel, the company Kann from Bendorf in Germany has now supplemented its product portfolio with the ProKlima paving block in whose production CO2 emissions can be reduced by 65 % compared to conventional paving blocks. The new ProKlima is optically identical to other paving blocks.

During production of the ProKlima block, Kann dispenses entirely with cement in the backing concrete, which amounts to about 90 % of the total paving block. Instead, an innovative concrete mixture is used as mineral binding agent that contains a substitute consisting of blast-furnace slag powder and fly ash. These substances, known as geopolymers, are by-products formed during iron production and during combustion in coal-fired power plants. They are in this way put to new use and, at the same time, contribute to the significant 65 % reduction of CO2 footprint in blocks of 8-cm thickness.

Climate block 100 % reusable by concrete recycling

Only the 1-cm thick facing layer, which can be produced in nearly all designs of the Kann product range, still consists in ProKlima pavers of concrete of conventional production. In terms of structure, slip resistance, chamfer run and coloring, the installed climate blocks are accordingly exactly equivalent to their classic counterparts. But not only this: they are likewise equally resistant to loading, frost and the effect of de-icing salt – and thus meet all technical requirements for conventional paving blocks. They are therefore perfectly suitable in nearly all areas of application. The block thicknesses of 8, 10, 12 and 14 cm offer a wide-ranging application spectrum.

Processing staff can handle the ProKlima paving blocks as usual. The blocks are laid by the same techniques. Following removal, the climate blocks can, of course, be recycled up to 100 %, the same as with conventional concrete, and can be reused. In summary: Kann delivers with ProKlima a modern construction material alternative, without compromising quality, and with active support of circular economy.
