Start of series production: Light-transmitting concrete with integrated thermal insulation

For several years, Luccon has been manufacturing translucent concrete made of high-strength fine concrete, which is light transmitting thanks to embedded optical fibers. Now, the innovative company located in Germany and Austria has successfully managed a further development which ushers in a new era of façade construction: light-transmitting concrete with integrated thermal insulation.
Luccon had already been operating internationally in the field of translucent concrete with the series production of light-transmitting concrete building elements of variable sizes. However, the factory in Klaus (Austria), which gave an entirely new image to the application of concrete by light passing through the wall, did not come to a standstill with the developments. The most recent outcome is Luccotherm – a combination of light-transmitting concrete having a core of thermal-insulating material. Therewith, a construction material is now available, which does without the so far necessary application of additional insulation layers, is self-supporting, and thus suitable for the application in structural construction. The transparency is not affected by the thermal-insulating core. The series production started running already. At present, the building elements are available in a length of up to 250 cm and a height of up to 80 cm in a range of various thicknesses and insulating values. The components having an U-factor of up to 0.18 W/m2K are also available as large-scale façade elements as of 2009. The elements are manufactured in a casting method especially designed for this purpose. The first objects made by Luccotherm are already in the planning stage and will be realized in the USA in 2009.
