Technical guidelines for permeable concrete pavements

In France, no guidelines have yet been published that specify the requirements for permeable concrete block pavements and their performance. The Study and Research Center of the French Concrete Industry (Centre d’études et de recherches de l’industrie du béton, Cerib) recently issued a draft that amongst other things contains technical requirements for permeable paving blocks as well as a test protocol to characterize the vertical permeability of pavements.

Following the European Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) [1], on every large watershed, general guidelines were agreed with respect to a balanced and sustainable water resource management. According to these guidelines, local authorities need to define rainfall zones whilst detailing areas where actions must be implemented to limit soil sealing and to control rainwater flow and runoff.
