Sustainable infrastructure management of the city of Neu-Ulm

Preserving the value and substance of road, sewer and engineering structures

For many years now, the public has been focusing on the condition of traffic infrastructure as well as the condition of sewer systems. In this regard, the preservation of value and substance of the existing infrastructure becomes more and more important.

The preservation of existing structures, rehabilitation and maintenance of infrastructure as well as the preservation of its quality and function is a long-term task of the public sector. Therefore, the willingness to make necessary, appropriate and permanent investments in infrastructure is absolutely essential owing to the often poor conditions.

In conjunction with the already submitted conceptual infrastructure management agreed by the city council of Neu-Ulm regarding roads and the maintenance measures derived thereof, it will be necessary to take more engineering measures in the field of engineering structures in the future for maintaining and securing existing building structures in the short, medium and long run. The conceptual development of a rehabilitation strategy for engineering structures is planned for 2018.

In addition, the subject area of urban drainage, the preservation and securing of functioning sewer networks, becomes more and more important and can only be solved as part of an overall strategy for sewers. For this purpose, the city council has already awarded a contract for the conceptual development of a rehabilitation strategy for sewers, to be completed in 2018.

These difficult and complex challenges, however, can only be approached and managed if the system “infrastructure” and the subject of preservation of value and substance across the above-mentioned areas (road, building structures, sewer system) and the involvement of further responsible authorities because of depen-dencies and synergies will be considered, combined and managed in an integrated manner.
