Sustainable building with geotextiles in block pavements – Notes on planning and design

Geotextile construction methods, as a rule, replace natural non-renewable raw materials such as sand, gravel and crushed rock – including construction of block-paved traffic routes and surfaces. Geotextiles, by preserving natural non-renewable raw materials and enabling considerable reduction of CO2 emission, fine dust and emission during transport and installation, make a significant contribution to sustainable building.

The main difference between road construction with block pavement
and road construction with a surface of asphalt or concrete, is the permeability to water of the wearing course. In construction of road with asphalt or concrete surfacing, the mineral material mixes of the individual layers are chosen by verification of the bearing capacity, the stability and the frost resistance. For block-paved traffic routes, a check of the filter stability in all boundary areas is additionally required. The supplemental requirements placed on the mineral material mixes of the individual layers are the following:

Assurance of filter stability, taking into account the required permeability of water with geotextile nonwovens, is the most simple and most cost-efficient solution.

In this presentation, the following questions will be answered:

Where do I use geoplastics in block pavements?

Where do I use the geoplastics in my pavement structure to the best advantage and for cost efficiency?

How do I choose the suitable kind and the right type from among the great variety of geoplastics (nonwovens, drainage mesh, reinforcement grid etc.)?

What requirements are placed on installation and processing at the construction site?

The requirements placed on the sustainability of the construction materials and the construction methods in the area of transport and infrastructure have increased significantly. For this reason, the last part of the presentation not only discusses the economic advantages of the construction methods with geoplastics, but also the ecological benefits of this construction method.

“With geotextiles in your construction you save any amount of gravel – and not only preserve natural resources, but reduce CO2-emission as well! Also in construction of block pavements. Detailed information at www.ivgeokunststoffe.de.
