International resarch award goes to Weimar

Junior research prize for graduand

 In March 2011, the prize of the „International Associa-tion for Science and Technology of Building Maintenance and Monuments Preservation” (WTA) was awarded to
Annegret Hofmann for her thesis entitled „Influence of aggregates on blistering of coatings on concrete“. She graduated with Dr. Ing. Kay Andre Bode holding professorship of polymer materials at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Bauhaus University Weimar.

The thesis investigates the influences of aggregates soluble in alkalis in terms of blistering of coatings on concrete (alkali-silica reaction - ASR). For this purpose, on the one hand, concretes were made in model tests using various kinds of aggregates with different ASR risks. These were coated subsequently and exposed to a backward penetration of moisture. On the other hand, model tests were carried out in order to visualize the semi-permeable membrane that is an essential precondition of blistering. The findings are an important step towards clarifying the phenomenon of osmotic...
