Utilization of basalt fibers in the AAC technology
With a view to the efforts being made worldwide to protect the climate, the requirement to save global energy resources and the continuous increase in energy prices, heat loss from buildings is now seen much more critically than some decades ago. Tighter requirements on the thermal insulation of buildings, improved insulation materials and new technologies to produce highly effective materials for multi-layer insulation systems. This article reports on investigations in which basalt fibers were added to various aerated concrete mixes.
Aerated concrete products play a major role as heat insulation materials. This is due to the many favorable characteristics of these materials, such as their low density, good insulation parameters and easy workability and finishing. In addition, they are not flammable, rot-proof and cost-efficient. However, their range of application is limited by, for example, their brittle fracture under tensile stress. In order to counteract this behavior, the aerated concrete is fitted with reinforcement without any compromising effect on its heat insulation properties.
